About Out & About Marketing

Out & About Marketing is a reading site for people who run small businesses, or who are about to. We write down what we have learned about getting a business noticed and keeping its money in order, in language you can act on between customers rather than after a course.

Think of it as a shared notebook. Some pages are step-by-step methods, some are longer looks at a tool or a trend, and some are simply the questions we kept asking ourselves until the answers became clear enough to publish.

What you will find here

The site is split into five sections, each with its own page:

  • Marketing & Sales covers planning, branding and the visuals a small firm needs, starting with a marketing plan that fits on one page.
  • PR & Media is about earning coverage: press releases, pitches and working with reporters.
  • Local Marketing deals with being found nearby, from reviews to the replies you write under them.
  • Finance looks at the money side, from investing tools to the subscriptions that quietly add up each month.
  • Insights gathers longer reflections that do not fit neatly anywhere else.

Who it is for

Mostly owners and early staff of small companies: the café with two employees, the freelance designer, the family trade business, the shop that has just opened a web store. If you do your own marketing on top of everything else, you are the reader we picture when we write.

Larger teams are welcome too, though our examples tend to assume a modest budget and a calendar that is already full.

How we approach a subject

We start from the practical question a business owner would actually type into a search bar, then try to answer it in the order you would need the answers. Where a method has limits, we say so. Where a decision depends on your own circumstances, such as money, contracts or legal duties, we explain the general picture and suggest speaking to someone qualified who knows your situation.

We also avoid shortcuts that can come back to bite. You will not find advice here on buying reviews or followers, gaming platforms or dressing up adverts as news. Honest methods take longer, but they hold.

What this site is not

We do not take on clients or run campaigns for anyone. The articles are general information, written for reading, and they are not a substitute for professional advice on finance, tax or law.

Where to go next

To meet the people writing these pages, see the small team behind it. For a section-by-section overview, try topics we write about, and if a term trips you up, the plain-English glossary should help. Questions and corrections are always welcome through our contact page.

Lines the team keeps coming back to

Said in our own meetings, written down so we stick to them.

  • “If the tactic would embarrass you in front of a customer, leave it out.” — Cosima

  • “A headline should already be the news. Everything else is detail.” — Ansel

  • “Write the budget down, especially when it is uncomfortable.” — Eudora

  • “A page nobody opens again is not a plan, it is a souvenir.” — Barnabas

Pen names, real habits

The four people writing here

Each of us follows one corner of small-business marketing.

  • Barnabas

    Planning and branding

Keeps the notebook tidy and makes sure every guide answers its title question early.

  • Ansel

    Press and media

Has opinions about subject lines and writes the pages on releases and pitches.

  • Cosima

    Local marketing

Covers map listings and reviews, and turns down any shortcut that relies on bending the rules.

  • Eudora

    Money pages

Reads the small print on finance topics and keeps those articles general and cautious.
